The event took place on Saturday 28th September and saw the best surf lifesaving athletes from Devon, Cornwall, Wales and the Eastern Region compete against each other to take home the Celtic Cup. Youth and open teams from each region took part.

This was the first time that the Eastern Region has been invited to take part in the long established Celtic Cup, demonstrating a huge step forward for the sport in our region. Surf lifesaving is a very popular sport in Devon, Cornwall and South Wales with several thriving clubs boasting hundreds of members. Here in East Anglia the sport is less mainstream with just three Clubs in Norfolk and Suffolk. All three clubs have grown significantly in recent years and attendance and strong performance at SLSGB events including the National Surf Life Saving Championships has helped to put the Eastern Region firmly on the map. At the Masters Surf Lifesaving Championships at Branksome Chine back in August, a team of over twenty athletes from North Norfolk SLSC enjoyed phenomenal success taking third place in a field of 22 teams.

The Celtic Cup Eastern Regions team was captained by Waveney Clubbie Sam Every and Charlie Cooper of North Norfolk SLSC. The Welsh Open team took the title overall, with Welsh Youth taking second and Cornish Youth coming third. The Eastern Regions Open and Youth teams took joint 7th place.

“I’m really proud of our entire team. It was a fantastic weekend and each and every one of our athletes gave their all. 2024 has been such a successful season for Waveney and the Eastern Region, I can’t wait to see what next year brings.” Sam Every, Captain.

The Celtic Cup has brought the season to a close on a real high for East Anglia. Here at Waveney we may have left the beach for the year but our training continues in the pool at St Felix, Southwold, where we’ll be building our strength and skills ready for next year!
